On my epic roady across the country I had many blonde moments – this one takes the cake :
I had been driving for a while and busting to use the ladies so I decided to stop in at a little country pub in the Clare Valley region. I parked outside and left Chaos in the car while i did what i had to do ( It was 0 degrees outside , no need to call animal welfare ).
After I finished I went back inside the pub to buy something to drink and no one was in the pub – no staff or customers which I thought was a bit weird but then country pubs are pretty laid back…. After 10 minutes of waiting I started to get pissed off . Bugger it I thought to myself Ill go and get a drink up the road. I stormed out of the pub to find a crowd gathered on the footpath , a couple of them looking as pissed off as I felt .. I looked at the carpark and realized why – my troopy obviously had a faulty handbrake (amongst other things ) and because I had only just started driving a manual I didn’t realize you have to leave them in gear when you park them. Which explains why my car had rolled down the slope and landed smack bang into this old guy’ s Nissan Patrol. Luckily for me he didn’t want to involve the cops because he was drunk and shouldn’t have been driving in the first place.
Anyway if Chaos had a phone I’m pretty sure he would have sent me this ….

This is Chaos , my best buddy and co pilot – me and Chaos have taken many road trips together , our most memorable would have to be the time we drove from Darwin NT to Albury NSW ( from the top to the bottom of Australia for those of you who have no idea where either town is ! ) It was a 4000 km trip and we did it in the troopy (an old Toyota land cruiser with no seats in the back ) sleeping on the side of the road. Also I must mention that I had no CD player , the radio in Outback Australia is not to be relied upon and noone sells tapes anymore … so picture me singing (badly) all the songs i knew the words to which wasn t many so I had a couple on repeat ( Tina and Ike Turner’s Proud Mary was one – I know wtf ? ) and good old Chaos howled along .. Either he is very intelligent or I’m an extremely bad singer ( I’m guessing the latter ).
I think the worst part of the trip was when I pulled into the tiny South Australian town of Woomera to order some dinner. I was going to keep driving to the next truck stop and set up camp as I had done for the previous 2 nights . While I was waiting for my dinner in the roadhouse/pub I noticed a missing persons poster . Upon closer investigation it turned out the man missing was Jason Richards who left Darwin a week before I had with his dog and his boat and hadn’t been seen since (unfortunately he was found a few weeks later and sadly was not found alive ) – he was traveling the exact route I was taking so this unsettled me a bit and I was very careful about where I slept from then on – I ended up staying at the road house that night and outside a family home in a country town the next . Anyway we made it to Albury alive if not nearly insane !! I will be posting more pics and stories from this road trip , I have so many they wont fit into one post !

This is a classic example of a typical Aussie outback pub. The Larrimah Wayside Inn is a pub / restaurant /caravan park/ mini zoo located on the Stuart Hwy just south of Katherine. They reckon they have the tallest bar in the territory – its 184.04 meters above sea level – of course thats not the top of the bar 😉 .I stopped here on my treck from Darwin to Albury – Wodonga and thought it was one of the best pubs I had seen – I was disappointed I didn’t have enough time to stop and have a beer with the locals. I did have time to have a quick look around though and not only does this pub have a giant panther sitting outside , it also has a mini zoo around the back and a room full of snakes (its ok they are in aquariums !). There is also the famous tinnie wall which I guess is a tribute to beer cans …. So if your in Australia and just happen to be traveling southbound down the Stuart Highway pull in and check it out !
Photo : taken by me 😉
